ESOL Learners Outside University of Bath

Our ESOL learners at Weston College have already launched into an exciting new season of extracurricular activities - and we’re delighted to share an update on what they’ve been up to.

The ESOL learners began with a fantastic trip to the University of Bath, including a short visit into the city before heading home. A huge thank you to Liza and her team at the council for their generous financial and hands-on support, and to the Virtual Schools team for kindly providing the sandwiches.

The visit was a real highlight - upon arrival, our learners were welcomed by two outstanding university ambassadors who offered a full campus tour and took the time to answer every question. This visit tied perfectly into the learner’s ESOL project, A Dream College, which has included group presentations and will conclude next week with a lively debate: College Campus vs. University Campus.

The students found the experience deeply inspiring, with many expressing a genuine interest in studying at Bath in the future. They were particularly impressed by the Olympic-sized swimming pool, the expansive athletics track and gym, the modern study spaces, and the vibrant students’ union.

 

 

ESOL also marked the first of their four Parents/Corporate Parents Afternoons. Families, carers, and corporate parents had the opportunity to meet with learners and tutors to discuss progress, development, and targets. They also shared a presentation showcasing the activities and tailored approaches used to help every learner reach their full potential. Our ESOL learners were incredibly proud to celebrate their achievements, and it was wonderful to see families engaging so positively with their learning journey.

Weston College and University Centre Weston (UCW) have announced plans for an exciting new Skills Academy in the Aerospace & Defence space, located at Airbus Filton, Bristol.

Set to welcome its first learners in September 2026, the Skills Academy will offer a unique, industry-led training environment designed to equip future engineers and technicians with the advanced skills required across aerospace, defence, and cutting-edge manufacturing sectors.

This £2.6 million project, developed in collaboration with key industry partners including Airbus, GKN Aerospace, Ministry of Defence and Rolls-Royce represents a significant milestone in Weston College Group’s mission to expand higher technical education and strengthen its position as a national leader in skills innovation.

Engineering the Future

The Skills Academy will provide learners with hands-on experience across fully equipped workshops, laboratories, and specialist learning spaces that reflect real engineering and manufacturing environments.

Planned facilities include: 

  • Machine Shop 
  • Maintenance Workshop 
  • Fabrication Workshop 
  • Engine Room 
  • Electronics Lab 
  • Hydraulics Lab 
  • Aero Lab 
  • Control Lab 
  • CAD Suites 
  • State-of-the-Art Classrooms 
  • Lecture Hall and Newton Room for Career Events 
  • Student Support Hub, Common Area, and Multi-Faith Room 
  • Quiet Room, Locker Room, Showers, and Changing Facilities.

With a strong focus on practical, project-based learning, the Skills Academy will enable students to engage with every aspect of engineering, from design and development to testing, problem-solving, and maintenance, within a live aerospace setting.

Built Around Learners and Industry

The Skills Academy is intended to deliver higher and degree-level apprenticeships while offering clear progression routes for full-time students already on Weston College’s engineering pathways. Learners will also have the unique opportunity to observe and engage with elements of the construction and fit-out phases, gaining valuable insights into project planning, site operations, and facility development.

Police and Crime Commissioner, Clare Moody, talking to A Level students

Last month, Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon & Somerset Police, Clare Moody, came into Weston College Sixth Form to deliver a guest lecture to our A Level Criminology students regarding her experiences and journey into the police.  

Clare has an extensive background in politics, working as a Member of the European Parliament in a range of committees, from Security and Defence, to Industrial Strategy, Research and Energy, and Gender Equality. She was also the Co-Chief Executive Officer at Equally Ours where she worked to combat equality issues. Clare has had many high-profile roles responding and resolving political issues and crisis before she became the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Avon & Somerset Police in 2024. 

During the guest lecture, Clare covered a wide range of key police issues including the priorities set out in the Police and Crime Plan, highlighting how her office works to ensure local policing reflects the needs and concerns of the community.  

She described her role as the Police and Crime Commissioner as the public voice of policing, acting as a bridge between the community and the police. She ensures the police are following rules, keeping the community safe, and supporting victims of crime, as well as guaranteeing the performance and strategic direction of policing to improve the criminal justice system. 

Additionally, Clare ensures that the force is held to account through independent panels and oversight of the Professional Standards Department. She also discussed her commitment to improving the police response to domestic violence, sharing that she has funded a detailed review into how Avon & Somerset Police handle these cases, with the aim of identifying and driving forward meaningful change. 

This invaluable insight gave our students a more in-depth look into a career in the police, giving them a better understanding of the protocols, roles and responsibilities, and plans for future improvements within the constabulary. 

Guest lectures are a great way for students to connect with employers and ask more specific questions to industry professionals. They allow students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world events and listen to first-hand recounts of experiences within the role. This gives them a better idea of their options after completing their course and the qualifications and pathways required to achieve their goals. 

A big thank you to Clare Moody for taking the time to visit our students and share her experiences, acting as an excellent example of perseverance and resilience.
